“There’s asbestos in my house. Can I dig a trench and bury it?”
I recently stumbled across this online. I was shocked by the question, but reassured by the answer.
The “Property Clinic” article from the Irish Times says:
“Burial of asbestos waste is strictly prohibited in Ireland and can potentially lead to major fines and/or prosecution from the HSA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under current legislation/regulations.”
It’s no different in England, Scotland and Wales.
We can all sleep better knowing that burying asbestos waste is strictly prohibited by law. Dealing with asbestos yourself can lead to hefty fines. Worse still, it comes with huge dangers and difficulties.
I’d outline three: identifying the stuff, removing the stuff, and finally, disposing of it (you can’t dig a trench and bury it!)
Before it was banned in 2000, 14 million houses were built during the period asbestos was widely used in construction. Asbestos can be found in a whole host of building materials in windows, walls, roofs, ceilings, flooring, heating systems, garages, the list goes on.
And as the Irish Times article says: “For every ACM (Asbestos Containing Material), there is an exact lookalike which does not contain asbestos.”
Asbestos is best left to the experts. It shouldn’t be a matter of guesswork.
I’d urge people to realise both the dangers, and the importance of calling in specialists.
Established in 2009, we’re equipped for every type of job and experienced in the latest practices.
Primed for those bigger projects, we’re able to slot in smaller non-licensed work, with minimum fuss.
Asbestos isn’t a lot of fun. But people like working with us.
We enjoy an enviable reputation in the hotel industry and local housing associations because of our thoroughness and discretion.
Customer satisfaction is key, but we’re also proud of the numbers.
In and around Swindon and Wiltshire, we’ve dealt with 83 garage roofs and worked in 367 residential homes in the last 12 months.

Major projects include shops in South Marston and Broad Town, a loft conversion in a beautiful family home in Sparcells, and assistance with the refurbishment of a basement conversion into a wine cellar in Wroughton.
If you think you have asbestos in your property, please, please, please, don’t dig a trench and bury it.
